Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi’s arcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is the etioogical agent of all forms of Kaposi’s sarcoma, a tumor of ixed cellularity occurring frequently during human immundeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection (AIDS/epidemicS) and in transplant recipients (iatrogenic KS) (Boshoff nd Weiss, 2001; Hengge et al., 2002). Such tumor also ccurs among non-HIV-infected individuals, predominantly ither in aged men of Mediterranean and Middle East oriins (classic KS) or in inhabitants from East and Central frica (endemic KS) (Boshoff and Weiss, 2001; Hengge et l., 2002). Clinically, KS is mainly characterized by skin lesions of arious aspects including macules, papules and/or nodules, hich are mainly localized on the lower limbs in the classic orm.
