Nutritional approaches and plant-dominant diets for conservative and preservative management of chronic kidney disease

2022
Abstract Nutrition in kidney disease is a complex topic due to the unique nutritional demands created by declining kidney function, the lack of a universal recommendation due to the varying stages of kidney function between patients, the limited excretion of certain nutrients in renal failure, and the ongoing need for robust evidence in many of these areas. However, as of recently, plant-based diets have recently emerged in the conversation of a more modern, evidence-based “kidney diet,” which has been termed as “PLADO” to reflect its plant-dominant, low-protein nature. This chapter reviews the literature on this type of diet and offers practical guidance on how to include this dietary approach for the benefit of patients with kidney disease.
