Self-efficacy theory, quality of life and myasthenia gravis self-management
2018
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic neuromuscular disease that can negatively affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients diagnosed with this dynamic condition. The authors propose that self-management programmes, coordinated and supervised by nurse practitioners, would improve patients' HRQoL. The purpose of this article is to examine the contribution of self-efficacy theory in relation to improvement of HRQoL in patients diagnosed with MG. The authors explore how a self-management programme specifically designed for MG patients would provide the necessary tools to improve self-efficacy and increase their coping skills. Recommendations for future self-management initiatives for this population are discussed. The authors describe the factors that are relevant to self-management in the MG population.
