PAPER NO. 2. EMISSIONS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

2001
The paper considers the sources of air pollution and their environmental impacts. Sources of pollutants detailed are industrial, vehicular, agricultural and waste processing plants producing SO2, NOx, particulates, CO2, methane and ammonia waste. The effects of such pollutants, particularly SO2, NOx, ozone and CO2 are examined, and how the concentration relates to the natural environment. The effect of acid deposition in 1995 is shown and compared with that estimated for 2005. Similarly, the impacts of nitrogen are considered, for which critical loads can be set for 2005. The impact of CO2 and other gases leading to the 'greenhouse' effect are also considered. The paper shows indications of changes in temperature and rainfall for the UK.
