SmartLohas: A Smart Assistive System for Elder People

2017
As getting older, aging people lose their memory abilities, visual abilities and decision abilities, which contribute to the problems about life adjustment and social connectedness. This research is to design an assistive tool system for elder people using emerging technologies in ICT. This system will build a smart environment and improve the social connectedness for elder people by providing the functions needed in daily lives of them for memories, visuals and decisions. There are four major components in the system: Schedule Reminder, Living Utility, Crowd Sourcing and Object Recognition. The aim of the system design is low-cost-high-performance, human-centered, and cloud-based. The user interface of the system supports voice interaction and guiding for low vision users and the recognition functions adopt the deep learning and GPU technologies. In addition, advanced IoT technologies are used to implement the mobile devices of aging people. Moreover, the assisting persons can follow the statuses of their corresponding elder people by the system.
