Preliminary Experiences with Intraoperative Ultrasonography in Cerebral Tumor Biopsy

1984
Recent technological advances in ultrasound instrumentation (gray scale “B” mode units) have resulted in equipment that image, in “real time”, slices of the human brain which are similar in quality to computerized tomography. The use of this technique in the operating room, after a small portion of the skull has been removed, shows the advantages of ultrasonography over the CT scan: little equipment is required, the possibility of imaging the lesion without radiation exposure, the resolution of cystic and solid lesions2.
