Epidemiological and clinical profile of lung cancer in Algiers

Bcakground: Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the most frequent cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the demographic, clinical, and histological characteristics and risk factors of patients diagnosed with lung cancer in our department. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on confirmed cases of primary lung cancer over a period of 03 years (between January 2012 and December 2014) in our center Results: A total of 170 patients, with a mean age of 68, 52, years with a primary lung cancer were identified.86,47% were male and 13,53% were female.Tobbaco smoking concerned 85,29% of our patients .The most frequent symptom was cough (50,6%) followed by chest pain (37,64%).The most common histopathological type was adenocarcinoma (55;8% of case ) followed by squamous cell carcinoma (29,41) and small cell carcinoma (12,35%). The majority of patients (90%) were diagnosed in the later stages of the disease (III and IV). Conclusions: Smoking was the most important risk factor and adenocarcinoma the most common histological type of lung cancer in our study.
