Radiation Test Results for Glenair 5 Gbps and 40 Gbps (4x10 Gbps) Optical Transceivers

2019
We evaluated the effects of heavy ions, protons, neutrons and gamma (Co60) on high speed commercial optical transceivers for potential use in space systems. Test results from heavy ion and proton testing of the Glenair 050-301, also known as “Size 8”, 5 Gbps opto- electronic transmitter/receiver demonstrate no destructive effects and low SEU and SEFI cross-sections. In addition the 050-301 devices demonstrate no sensitivity to neutron irradiation after a fluence of 2.5E+12n/cm2 and only a small increase in supply current, but no change in functionality after (Co60) TID exposures up to 250 krad(Si). The Glenair 050-346, also known as “parallel optics”, 40 Gbps (4 channels x10 Gbps each) transceiver was also tested with heavy ions and exhibited no destructive effects and very low SEFI and SEU sensitivity.
