Treatment of osteosarcoma of distal femur with mechanical reconstructive limb-salvage surgery using custom-made prosthesis

2011
Objective To evaluate the clinical effects of limb salvage with custom-made prosthesis for the treatment of osteosarcoma of distal femur. Methods Forty-two patients were diagnosed as osteosarcoma of distal femur and received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. At the same time limb-salvage surgery was performed with tumor resection and knee reconstruction using custom-made prosthesis. Results Forty-two cases were followed up for 15 to 55(average 32) months. The rate of short-term complications was 11.9%.According to Enneking function scoring system,it is excellent in 19 cases, good in 21 and fair in 2 cases.32 cases survived without tumor in 2 years and 26 in 5 years. The 5-year survive rate was 61.9%.Conclusion Extensive resection and reconstruction by using custom-made prosthesis with neoadjuvant chemotherapy is effective for osteosarcoma of the distal femur.
