Trends in practice of family planning: Varanasi (rural).

1976
The acceptance of family planning according to the variables of caste social status education occupation age number of living children have been studied with data gathered from a demographic and family planning survey conducted in rural Varanasi during 1969-70. Data from 669 couples taken from a 2200 household sample from 52 villages is examined. The data were gathered by interview each person interviewed by a person of their own sex. A low percentage of males 8% report having used contraceptives vasectomy being the most common followed by the condom. 42% of the women are contraceptive adopters and 54% of these have accepted the loop. The data reveals that fmaily planning acceptance varies by caste and a comparatively larger number of acceptors are in the upper and business caste for both males and females. A social status index was developed and data reveal no definite conclusion can be reached. This is also true of occupation. Data do reveal that both males and females with higher educational levels are more likely to accept family planning and this is also true of couples with higher numbers of children.
