2011
SUMMARY In this work, we have analysed a group of male patients from couples who undergo fertility treatment in our Center for Assisted Reproduction. The analysis of semen parameters has demonstrated that male patients with regular physical activity show an increased ejaculation volume, sperm concentration as well as increased sperm motility in comparison with patients with a sedentary lifestyle or patients with occasional physical activity. Moreover, the percentage of normozoospermic patients with regular physical activity was significantly higher compared with other patients. On the other hand, patients were grouped according to their Body Mass Index. In this analysis, we found that the recovery of motile sperm is decreased in pre-obese and obese class I patients. In addition, the percentage of patients diagnosed with spermatic anomalies was increased in pre-obese and obese class I patients. Diet and exercise could be recommendable when patients are involved in reproductive treatment. In summary, our results demonstrate that physical activity and Body Mass Index are directly related with the sperm quality. These two factors should be considered for the previous selection of sperm bank donors. Rev Asoc Est Biol Rep 2011; 16(1): 25-32.
