This pier is a representative and highly refined sample of what is known as the Puget Sound system of construction, an economical system that maintains the durability necessary in the harsh marine climate of Puget Sound. The low bid of 9. 02 million represents a net cost of 45 per square foot of pier surface area, and includes piling, deck panels, deck ballast, deck paving, utilities on pier, fendering system, below-deck crane rail power system, and mooring dolphins. The 1600- by 116-foot pier presented complex design and construction challenges, particularly in minimizing disruption of operations at adjacent facilities, upgrading the loading capacity of adjacent existing piers and driving piling through foundation material consisting of foundry slag.
