The Management of Deformities of the Foot in Children with Spina Bifida

SUMMARY A simple photographic technique is described which measures the weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing areas of the feet in the standing child. The child stands on a rectangular sheet of thick glass which is set into the floor. Beneath the floor is a cellar, from which the soles of the feet may be observed and photographed. A transparent grid placed over the photographic print enables the weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing areas of the foot to be measured, and thus to express the weight-bearing areas as a percentage of the total area of the sole of the foot. The procedure was used to assess 55 spina-bifida children who had had surgical correction of deformities of the feet. The findings are discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Behandlung von Fusfehlbidungen bei Kindern mit Spina bifida Es wird eine einfache photographische Technik beschrieben, mit der beim stehenden Kind die belasteten und die nicht belasteten Anteile der Fuse ausgemessen werden konnen. Das Kind stent auf einem in den Fusboden eingelassenen Rechteck aus dickem Glas. Unter dem Fusboden ist ein Keller, von dem aus die Fussohlen beobachtet und photographiert werden konnen. Mit Hilfe eines transparenten Mespapiers, das auf das Photo gelegt wurde, konnten die belasteten und die nicht belasteten Anteile der Fuse ausgemessen und die belasteten Anteile der Fuse als prozentualer Anteil der Fussohlen ausgedriickt werden. Die Methode wurde zur Beurteilung von 55 Kindern mit Spina bifida angewandt, bei denen chirurgische Korrekturen von Fusfehlbildungen durchgefuhrt worden waren. Die Befunde werden diskutiert. El nino esta de pie sobre una placa rectangular de cristal grueso puesto sobre el suelo. Debajo del suelo hay una zona sin cubrir, a traves de la cual se pueaden observar y fotografiar las plantas de los pies. Una parrilla transparente situada sobre la placa fotografica permite medir las areas de carga y de no-carga del pie y, de esta forma, expresar las zonas de carga en forma de porcentaje del area total de la planta del pie. Este procedimiento se utilizo para valorar 55 ninos con espina bifida que habian sufrido una correccion quirurgica de las deformidades de los pies. Se discuten los hallazgos.
