The Carotid Body

2015
The title of this communication should probably be followed by an exclamation mark, rather than a query. The crucial questions about the carotid body receptor complex remain the same as they have been since the studies of De Castro (I), namely, (1) a central problem in sensory physiology; what is the receptor structure and how does it perform its functions as a transducer?; (2) what are the physiologically important reflex effects in which this receptor complex is involved?
