Severe Mental Disorders and Neuropsychiatric Conditions in Refugee Children and Adolescents

2020
This chapter reviews the prevalence of severe mental disorders (SMDs) which include psychosis (e.g., schizophrenia spectrum disorders) and bipolar disorders and epilepsy and seizure disorder (ESDs) among children and adolescents who are refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We provide an outline for humanitarian workers focused on basic principles of assessment and clinical management for SMDs and ESDs in youth, particularly in situations of forced displacement.
