Engineered biodegradable melt-spun fibers

2021
Abstract Many synthetic polymer materials are dangerous to earth because they will stay untouched and have a long lifecycle time. Social interest and some mandatory rules, in developed countries, and fast cultural improvement, in developing countries, have been forcing them to use bioplastics following strongly instead of synthetic polymers. The bio-based and biodegradable polymers were applied in fibrous shape at different technical textiles since their usage on plastic and packaging. This chapter focuses on melt-spun biodegradable fibers and their biodegradability properties and analysis. Therefore important definitions and classifications, the manufacturing method of pure and blend biodegradable fibers, structure and biodegradability properties, and their measurement standard methods were considered. Finally, applications of melt-spun biodegradable fibers as apparel and technical textile and their future trends have been presented.
