Sequels of rheumatic fever: chronic rheumatic heart disease

The outcome of rheumatic fever spans the spectrum from complete recovery (always marred, however, by a predisposition to recurrences) to death from intractable heart failure during the acute attack. In between are the various kinds of chronic rheumatic heart disease, each with its own characteristic natural history, and with its own spectrum of severity.
