2007
ship experience and matching at a program that the candidate chooses. Materials and Methods: Questionnaires were sent to 180 first year oral and maxillofacial surgery residents in ADA-accredited OMFS programs, and 61 residents responded. The questionnaire consisted of 31 questions grouped into 4 sections: general information, externship experience, candidate training/qualifications, and the match process. Method of Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics (frequency and percent) were determined for all survey questions, and comparisons were made using Fisher’s Exact test. Results: Of the 61 responses, 53% and 51% of the responders respectively were ranked in top 10% of the class and scored 90-94 Part I of the National Dental Boards. Most applicants (66%) did not complete an advanced education program; however, 98% performed at least one externship which on average lasted 4.5 weeks and spent $500 - $1500. Respondents listed faculty recommendations and the program reputation as accounting for 48% of the decision where to perform an externship. Conclusion: Only 25% of the applicants who performed an externship matched with their externship program. There is a significant association between a number of applications to the Match and the amount of experience as well as class rank. A larger percentage of applicants whose class rank is 0-10% tend to apply only one time to the Match compared to other applicants. The experience of an externship plays an integral role in the Match selection process.
