Production of activated carbon from bio-waste materials by chemical activation method

2020
The main objective of this research is to produce activated carbon from bio-waste materials by using the chemical activation method and to establish the optimum condition for its production. Bio-waste materials that were utilized in this experiment are wood pieces, coconut shell, and sawdust. These materials were treated with phosphoric acid and then pyrolyzed at a temperature range of 200°C to 500°C. Effect of the different types of activation conditions was examined by comparing the results of the methylene blue test and proximate analysis of the prepared samples. The most suitable conditions for the preparation of activated carbon were found to be 500°C, 360°C and 300°C for the pyrolysis of wood piece, coconut shell, and sawdust respectively.
