Solid-state hydrides for hydrogen storage

2021
Abstract The presence of nonrenewable fuels are decreasing, while simultaneously, demand is scaling up. Hydrogen emerges out as an effective fuel solution to meet the demand, but the prevailing challenge is the storage of hydrogen. The present chapter deals with the challenges of the typical solid form of hydrogen-storing possibilities using a metal hydride-based technique. Metal hydrides are one of the front runners in the storage process of hydrogen due to its superiorities concerned with cost, safety, handling, and capability of storage. Yet problems prevail as the activation at the beginning is not to the level of satisfaction and the absorption level is a matter of concern. The capacity of hydrogen storage is higher than liquid- and gas-based storage, but not sufficient for the continuous run of vehicles in comparison to conventional fueling. Though the issues are part of the storage mechanism, progress have been made toward an efficient hydrogen storage system.
