Using ultrasonic attenuation measurements to investigate anomalies in the structure of railway axles

1984
Abstract From measurements of the attenuation of ultrasound in railway axles, this article investigates the relationship between the to at attenuation coefficient and its scattering component and anomalies in the ttructure of the railway axles. Variations in the structure of the ferritic-pearlitic steel have a substantial effect on ultrasonic attenuation and by thasuring these variations it is possible to evaluate the quality of heat treatment applied to the axles.
