P-seIectjn and Venous thromboembolism

2009
Activated platelets are key components in many arterial disorders.p-seIectin is an activation-dependent platelet receptor, which is also identified in endothelial cells. This transmembrane protein has continued to attract great interest as it supports rapid and reversible cell adhesion in flow svstems and thus plays an essential role in multicellular interactions during thrombosis. For diagnostic purposes,P-seiectin can readily be detected on the platelet surface by flow cytometry and by ELISA as a soluble ligand m the plasma'and these data bear clinical significance in the pathogenesis of venous thrombosis. The inhibition of interaction of P-selectin with the ligand could downregulate cytokine and tissue factor expression and repress recruitment of leukocytes. Key words: P-selectin; Venous thromboembolism
