Therapeutic Effect of Tribulus Terrestris (Chota Gokhru, an Ayurvedic Drug) in the Management of Experimental Hyperoxaluria

1994
Ayurveda is the oldest existing medical system of traditional medicine, having its heritage in ancient India. It is recognized by the World Health Organisation and is still practised. Hyperoxaluria is one of the primary risk factors of urolithiasis. In various systems of traditional medicine, a number of indigenous plants are being used in India and other countries. One such plant is Tribulus terrestris (family zygophyllaceae) common in arid zones of India. Although its extract is known to have diuretic and antilithic properties1 its mode of action is not fully understood. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the mode of action of T. terrestris in hyperoxaluric rats.
