INFLUENCE OF TYRE PROPERTIES TO MODERN VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEMS

2002
The tyre is responsible for the transmission of all forces and torques from the vehicle to the road. Only a very small contact area (for truck, the size of A4 paper) has to transmit high forces under all braking and steering conditions. Tyres on steering axles basically have other properties than tyres on driven axles. The properties can be described in longitudinal force - slip curves and lateral forces - slip angle curves. Moreover these properties are an input to new vehicle control systems such like ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ABS systems. An ABS controls the tyre. The efficiency of an ABS control unit depends on tyre characteristics. Some tyres are responsive to this control but some do not respond well to ABS system. To obtain more safety and higher comfort we have to use synergies between tyres and control systems. It is necessary to tune the tyre and the control systems to obtain the highest performance. This report shows different truck tyre properties and the influence of these properties on modern truck braking and vehicle control systems. For the covering abstract see ITRD E119187.
