The Slovak Republic is situated in Central Europe, sharing frontiers with the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. By world standards, Slovakia is a tiny territory, a small and independent country (since January 1, 1993) in the heart of Europe, not only metaphorically but also geographically. The population of the Slovak Republic is 5.38 million and the area of the country is 49030 km 2 . Substantial part of Slovakia is covered with mountains. Three low lands are located in the southern part of Slovakia: Zahorska (Borska) nizina and Podunajska nizina in the West and Vychodoslovenska nizina in the East. South-western border of the country is formed by Danube river. The main country natural resources are: antimony ores, mercury, iron ores, copper, lead, zinc, precious metals, magnesite, limestone, dolomites, gravel, brick soils, ceramic materials, stone salt, brown coal and natural gas. The territory has a mild continental climate with average annual temperature 10°C. The Capital, Bratislava, is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.
