INVESTIGATION OF MAJOR SALIVARY DUCT OBSTRUCTION BY SEQUENTIAL SALIVARY SCINTIGRAPHY

Sequential salivary scintigraphy (SSS) is a dynamic anatomic-functional radionuclide study in which the uptake, concentration, and excretion of radiopertechnetate by the major salivary glands are studied with a gamma camera.Three patients are reported who had obstruction of Stensen’s ducts which was documented by both SSS and contrast sialography.Although these 2 laboratory procedures generally provide supplementary diagnostic information, SSS may be used to investigate the integrity of the major salivary ducts when sialography is contraindicated.
