Binocular function after surgical treatment of infantile esotropia

2001
Post-operative course and binocular function were investigated in patients who underwent surgical treatment of infantile esotropia at less than two years of age. In 23 patients who underwent bilateral medial rectus recession to treat infantile esotropia and who could be followed for more than one year after surgery, the time course of eye position and binocular function were followed using Lang, Lang II, the Titmus Stereo Test (T.S.T.), and the Synoptophore Test. Of the 20 patients in whom binocular function could be tested, 17 (85%) had confirmed stereoacuity that ranged from 600 to 200 seconds of arc (?). No patient acquired =170? grade of stereoacuity. Twelve patients had lost stereopsis during the follow-up period, although three of them showed recovery following orthoptic training. Eight patients currently retain stereopsis. Although the first surgery at less than two years of age does not allow infants with infantile esotropia to acquire high-quality stereoacuity, a stereoacuity of about 200? is lik...
