FUNÇÕES DESEMPENHADAS PELO ENFERMEIRO EM UNIDADE DE TERAPIA INTENSIVA* FUNCTIONS DEVELOPED BY NURSE IN AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT FUNCIONES DESARROLLADAS POR EL ENFERMERO EN LA UNIDAD DE TERAPIA INTENSIVA

This exploratory qualitative study aiming to identify the functions performed by the nurse in the Intensive Care Unit, following the Canadian frame about functions of nurse (care, educate, coordinate, collaborate and supervise). Data collection occurred in 2009 by applying a questionnaire and the systematic observation of nine nurses in an intensive care unit of a private hospital in the city of Curitiba. The collected data were categorized by the technique of content analysis. The results indicate that the nurses are mostly young women, who have no expertise in the intensive care unit. The observation of the activities found out that all the functions described in the frame are performed by nurses of this service, and the functions of coordination, supervision and expertise technical care were the most significant. Estudio exploratorio, con enfoque cualitativo con objetivo general de identificar las funciones desarrolladas por enfermero en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva, siguiendo el marco canadiense de funcion del enfermero (atencion, educar, coordinar, supervisar y colaborar). Los datos fueron recolectados en 2009 mediante aplicacion de cuestionario y observacion sistematica de nueve enfermeros de una unidad de terapia intensiva de un hospital privado de Curitiba-PR, Brasil. Los datos obtenidos fueron clasificados por la tecnica de analisis de contenido. Los resultados indican que los enfermeros son en su mayoria mujeres jovenes, que no tienen experiencia en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. La observacion de las actividades presenta que todas las funciones descritas en el marco son desarrolladas por los enfermeros del servicio, donde las funciones de coordinacion, supervision y atencion tecnica son las mas significativas.
