We present an algorithm for adapting the size and geometry of a subarray (of a much larger array) in order to optimize the detection and resolution performance of the subarray. This allows the efficient and accurate use of high resolution DOA estimation algorithms. We have also analyzed the two source case in detail and have developed a critical distance definition that plays a major role in analyzing the reg olution performance of an array. Finally, we present a simple procedure for designing a planar array yielding high resolution .performance. I. INTRODUCTION
