Dielectric Resonator Antenna Fed by an Offset Tapered Microstrip Line

This paper presents the investigation of a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) fed by an offset tapered microstrip line. In the study, the width of the microstrip line and the width of the coupling area overlapping with the DRA on the side edge of the feed line are optimized so as to enhance the coupling and increase the impedance bandwidth. An −10dB S 11 bandwidth of 11.3% around the centre frequency of 3.5GHz has been obtained in the experiment, compared to 3.4% using the centre feed. The antenna studied is aimed for applications in 5G communications at the 3.5GHz band.
