Summary and Research Recommendations

2013
We are facing a pandemic of obesity of a huge magnitude which in future, would have major impact on the long term health of human race, irrespective of age, sex and ethnicity. Obesity per see is an independent risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality. An obese woman has higher risks not only during all phases of her reproductive career but these risks continue to increase even in the post reproductive phase as well. Similarly there are increased societal costs as well, as obesity impairs quality of life by increased associated disease burden. Obesity in men also not only affect their quality of life but also has a detrimental effect on their reproductive performance as well. In order to develop multi agency focused strategies, to deal with this huge challenge in future, we must try to understand the complex interplay of multiple factors such as genetics, environmental and human behavior. The strategies should not only focus on weight management but also look into safe service models where weight management might not work It is important for the health care planners to work very closely with the health care providers to develop evidence based services models for delivery of care in safe environments.
