It is with much appreciation that I acknowledge the signal honor you have bestowed upon me to join in commemoration of one of America's greatest medical statesmen. Dr. Frank Billings was a man of great size and endowed as well with a powerful personality; his presence was dominant in any gathering. A bedside doctor primarily, he had the scope of vision to see that, for the discipline of medicine to progress, effort must be made for an ever closer understanding of disease at the more basic levels. It was through his influence and persuasion that money for the great Billings Clinic was provided by another member of his family. His medical hobby was the relation between focal infection and general disorders, a subject still highly controversial in our time.
