Plasma technology for the steel industry

The design and performance of plasma torches is described. The use of a plasma to superheat the blast to allow increased coal injection rates in the blast furnace is discussed with the results of calculations based on a mathematical model (details of which are given). The Mesabi Metal process for the reduction of iron ore to molten iron with a plasma and pulverised coal is outlined. Plasma heating of the blast for the foundry cupola, substantially reducing coke consumption, is also discussed briefly.
