Testicular torsion in late adolescence and adult:diagnostic value of color Doppler ultrasonography and contrastenhanced ultrasonography

2013
Objective:To evaluate the value of color Doppler ultrasonography(CDUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography(CEUS) in diagnosing testicular torsion in late adolescence and adult. Methods:Twelve patients aged 18 to 66 years with suspected testicular torsion received both CDUS and CEUS.Results:Of the 12 patients,11 patients had testicular torsion and 1 patient presented testicular congestion secondary to spermatic cord compression by an epididymal cyst.On CDUS,the basis for diagnosing testicular torsion was the absence or decrease of flow in the symptomatic testis, which yielded a sensitivity of 100% and an accuracy of 91.7%.Non-perfusion,perfusion defect or the "ring sign" displayed on CEUS had a sensitivity of 100% and an accuracy of 100% in the diagnosis of testicular torsion. Conclusions:The results indicate that both CDUS and CEUS are useful for the diagnosis of testicular torsion in late adolescence and adult, and CEUS has a higher accuracy. However, further studies are needed to confirm the value of CDUS and CEUS for the diagnosis of testicular torsion.
