Applications of Ultrasonography in Maxillofacial/Intraoral Inflammatory and Cystic Lesions

2021
Cysts are sack-like pathologic cavities which are lined with epithelium and filled with fluids, air, or other matters. Jaws are the most frequent localization for the cyst formation since odontogenic epithelium mostly remains after teeth formations. Until recently, odontogenic cysts and non-odontogenic cysts were evaluated with 2D dental radiographs, orthopantomography, and cone-beam computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging was also utilized in the last decade; however, ultrasonographic features of the odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts were not fully understood.
