Dyslipidemia in HIV/AIDS infected patients on follow up at referral hospitals of Northwest Ethiopia: a laboratory-based cross-sectional study

2020
Abstract Introduction There is a growing concern about dyslipidemia among HIV patients. In spite of this fact, there is limited evidence for the burden of dyslipidemia among HIV-infected persons receiving ART in developing countries like Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aims to determine the burden of dyslipidemia in patients living with HIV/AIDS receiving care at referral hospitals of Northwest Ethiopia, 2019. Materials and methods An institutional based cross-sectional study design was conducted to determine the burden of dyslipidemia in patients living with HIV/AIDS receiving care at referral hospitals of Northwest Ethiopia between February 2019 and April 2019. Four hundred seven randomly selected adult patients were included in this study. Using standardized questionnaire, sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical data were collected. Lipid profiles as well as anthropometric indicators were measured. Bivariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed. Result The magnitude of dyslipidemia was found to be 63.9% (95%CI: 59.23,68.57) with elevated LDL, elevated TC, elevated TG and reduced HDL being 27.8%, 34.2%, 39.6% and 21.1%, respectively. Educational status, monthly income of moderate and high level [AOR (95% CI) 3.92 (2.01, 7.73), p Conclusion The burden of dyslipidemia was notably high in the patients. Educational status, monthly income, another substance use, use of other drugs and ART regimen were significantly associated with dyslipidemia in HIV patients.
