The application and significance of inferior vena cava filter placement for deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremity

2010
Objective To assess the indications, complications, significance and the essentiality of anticoagulation and thrombolysis therapy post-operation of inferior vena cava filters(IVCF)placement in cases of deep vein thrombosis(DVT)of the lower extremity. Methods Retrospective analysis the clinic data of the 31 cases with DVT of the lower extremity who accepted IVCF placement from January 2008 to March 2009 in our hospital, and follow-up all of the cases. Results The filters were successfully inserted in subrenal vena cava without serious complications happening in the operation.there was no case of symptomatic pulmonary embolism(PE)occurred during 6~20 months of follow-up,there was one case of IVC thrombosis at the site of filter, which the incidence rate was 3.2%.There were no other complications. Conclusion IVCF placement can prevent fatal PE due to DVT effectively.Strict operative procedure and regular anticoagulation and thrombolysis therapy post-operation are the key of preventing the complications of filter placement.
