Signal transmission and amplification in unidirectional coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons

2010
Dynamical behaviors of unidirectional coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons were investigated when one neuron is subject to external noise. With the increment of coupling strength, the cooperative effect between the neural system and noise, that is the stochastic resonance behavior, can be transferred and amplified through the chain, indicating the fluent information transmission. Modulating the coupling strength can change the response of each neuron to noise, and each neuron has an appropriate coupling strength where signal amplification can be optimal. It means that coupling plays an important role in neural information detecting and transduction.
