Numerical study on failure behavior of brittle rock with single interrupted fissure under confining and pore pressure

2012
Numerical investigations were performed for brittle rock samples containing a single interrupted fissure under confining and pore pressure by a rock failure process analysis system.Based on the experimental results, the characteristics of crack propagation of the rock samples were obtained. The results show that mechanical parameters of the brittle rock are lower than intact rock samples and the lowering laws are closely related to fissure features. With the increase of fissure length, the mechanical parameters decrease, and with the increase of fissure angle, the peak strength and peak strain show a trend of decreasing and then increasing. The above relations are not influenced by confining and pore pressure.Confining pressure could increase the peak strength of rock, but the pore pressure has a contrary effect. When the fissure length is smaller or the fissure angle is larger, the crack propagation features tend to be inconspicuous, and the crack propagation is strongly influenced by confining and pore pressure. The research is helpful to understand the strength and deformation behavior of brittle rock containing a single interrupted fissure.
