General planning of thermal power plant

2021
Abstract General planning of the power boiler covers technical aspects, such as selection of boiler type, construction of boiler, selection of fuel and method of combustion, water circulation, heat transfer, and flue gas treatment; infrastructure, such as for fuel and water supplies; and environmental countermeasures and so on. This chapter overview these complex factors, in some case conflicted or contradicted among the factors to be considered. Current worldwide interest on global warming enhances the extensive use of renewable energy such as solar and wind powers typically found in the discussions in COP, and the Japan’s national energy plan. This, however, does not mean lowering the position of fossil fuel fired thermal power plant, rather, the role as a stable power supply changes to backup for the fluctuating power generations. Such a role of thermal power plant has been long taken since the nuclear power plants appeared as the stable power supply plants, while the present role change is for fluctuating power generation at every moment, which should be noted in planning, designing, and constructing thermal power plants. This chapter describes a brief guideline necessary in planning fossil fuel fired thermal plants. As the detailed design of the power boiler is described in fourth chapter, this chapter plays a role of bridging to fourth chapter, and in addition legal regulations for thermal plant in Japan are introduced.
