Compression of the trachea by an anomalous innominate artery

1969
Abstract Tracheal compression by an anomalous innominate artery is probably a more common cause of respiratory distress in infancy than is generally supposed. The anomaly appears to be frequently associated with esophageal atresia. Clinical features and findings in 6 selected cases are presented to show various degrees of compression and accompanying respiratory difficulties. Surgery is recommended only in severe cases. An extrapleural approach with partial splitting of the sternum was used in 3 patients with satisfactory results.
