Review and safety of generic presentations of sevoflurane

2015
Halogenated agents are the most commonly used hypnotic drugs for the maintenance of general anaesthesia worldwide. They are also much cheaper than intravenous agents when used in closed circuit conditions with a strictly controlled fresh gas flow. Owing to its pharmacological characteristics, sevoflurane is one of the most widely used halogenated agents. After the entry of different sevoflurane options into the market, doubts have emerged with respect to the safety and efficacy of these new options. In this article, we provide a critical and meticulous review of the bibliography, which is currently available on the subject. We should also emphasize that there are considerable differences in terms of cost between different presentations, which need to be taken into account, given that they have all been declared pharmacologically equivalent and clinically safe
