Numerical hydraulic simulation methods provide indispensable tools for determining flow conditions. The increasing availability of efficient soft- and hardware as well as appropriate basic data in general, allow for numerous applications of multidimensional flow simulations in hydraulic engineering. This article deals with practical aspects of one-and multidimensional simulations for flood analysis. Following a short historic outline of the development of numerical hydraulic models, typical applications of 1D, 2D and 3D simulations are discussed and explained by a practical example. The article ends with reflections on the suitability of models and limits of use from the viewpoint of current engineering projects.
