Effect of early hyperbaric oxygen therapy on quantitative electroencephalogram in patients with light-to-moderate diffuse axonal injury

2013
Objective To study the effect of early hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with light-to-moderate diffuse axonal injury. Methods With the knowledge and consent of the patients and following the signing of the letter of agreement,80 cases of diffuse axonal injury (DAI) were divided into the control group(20 cases) and the HBO group (160 cases).Data collected at the time points of F3,F4,C3,C4,O1 and O2 in the quantitative EEGs of the control group and the HBO group, both before and after HBO treatment. Then, changes in the obtained data were compared and results of the therapeutic effects were thus obtained. Results Pairing t tests of qEEG data (including θ 、α 、θ/α) for the patients of both groups both before and after treatment were P < 0.01,indicating that there were significant statistical differences in the data measured both before and after treatment.Take a as an example. The data measured at the time point of O2 for the control group were 11.07 ± 5.44 and 22.57 ± 5.78 before treatment and 32 days after treatment. On the other hand, the data for the HBO group were 10.96 ±5.89 and 32.97 ± 11.94 after 3 treatment courses. The 2 sample t tests of qEEG data differences for the 2 groups before and after treatment were of statistical significance (P < 0.05).Conclusions The measured data of quantitative EEGs demonstrated that HBO therapy could obviously improve the cerebral function of the patients with diffuse axonal injury.
