Comparative study on Mannesmann roll piercing processes between Diescher's guiding disk and Stiefel's guiding shoe

2013
In this paper, comparative study on a Mannesmann roll piercing process with respect to supporting equipment including Diescher's guiding disk and Stiefel's guiding plate of shoe is carried out. The same process conditions and geometries except the supporting equipment with those of the roll piercing process found from the literature are used for the two cases. A rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method with intelligent remeshing capability of tetrahedral elements is employed to simulate a roll piercing process. The important of remeshing and mesh density control in simulating the roll piercing process is emphasized to minimize the numerical errors due to change of material geometry as well as smoothing of state variables. Predictions of the processes with different supporting equipment show distinct difference in plastic deformation. It has been shown that the Diescher's type is the better of the two in terms of ellipticity but that the Stiefel's type is to the contrary for spatial efficiency.
