Follower forces: Leipholz's early researches in elastic stability

This paper provides an historical account of Leipholz's research into elastic stability. Emphasis is placed on divergence and flutter instability of follower force systems, the derivation of lower bounds for the critical load for divergence, and estimates for critical loads for flutter.
