Relative abundance of Eucampia antarctica as a close proxy to δ18O in upper Quaternary sediments of the Southern Ocean

1996
We have found that the relative abundance stratigraphy of the diatom, Eucampia antarctica, closely tracks δ 18 O in Southern Ocean sediment and that this is true for the Atlantic and Indian sectors north and south of the Antarctic Polar Front (APF). The E. antarctica relative abundance stratigraphy can be used, therefore, as a close proxy for δ 18 O in higher southern latitudes beyond the range of biogenic carbonate preservation.
