Potential infection control risks associated with chilled beam technology, experience from a UK hospital.

Summary Energy efficiency technologies are now a feature in hospital design with active chilled beams an example of one in use worldwide. Such innovations have clear benefits but there is paucity of information with respect to any infection control risks. We describe our experience of chilled beam technology from one of our hospitals where we faced challenges with cleaning and episodes of water ingress including condensation. We highlight the importance of infection control risk assessment in relation to new technologies and the implementation of appropriate risk mitigation.
