The use of herbal medicine is on the rise worldwide (Trindle et al, 2005). Many cultures have beliefs and prejudices towards the treatment of various morbidities that often affect their attitudes towards conventional medical practices. It would therefore be expedient to supplement, rather than to supplant such beliefs and cultural customs. This is the basis of ethnopharmacology, a science that aims to validate (or invalidate) the use of such plants for their alleged beneficial properties.
