Advance data from a 1974 review of 10 countries in East Asia - Hong Kong Indonesia Korea Laos W. Malaysia Philippines Singapore Taiwa n Thailand and S.Vietnam - shows birth death and growth rates by country as well as numbers of new acceptors to family planning and the methods most used. Indonesia had 1500000 new acceptors - the most in the region while Singapore had only 18400 new acceptors. Laos recorded the highest birthrate of 47 while Hong Kong had the lowest birthrate of 19.5. The lowest death rate was recorded for Taiwan at 4.8 while Laos had the highest death rate at 23. Pills were the most popular method in 9 of the 10 countries with only Taiwan reporting the IUD used by 58% of those using contraceptive methods. Rates of growth varied from 1.43% in Singapore to 3.1% in S. Vietnam.
